Final Blueprint

Here are the final blueprints for the float.

Thank you Jon!

We decided to go with the crayon box instead of a computer or white board. The crayon box will have 2 rows to seat 4-5 kids in each row, 8-10 kids total, dressed as crayons.

We also went with raising the shoe platform by 6 inches.

The following comment is in response to concerns that by having the crayon box or anything at the front of the float might limit the visibility of some of the kids:

As to the proposed changes, I thought of the visibility issue. The crayon box is only 5 feet wide, so all of the kids not in the crayon box will be visible as the float approaches. I thought about facing the crayon box forward, but I thought that the kids may feel isolated. It can be easily turned either direction. These kids will be standing, but they will be able to lean against the inside of the box. We should be selective about who is in the box.

Only teachers will be standing in the shoe. I have designed it so they will have a 3 foot side to lean against. We can ask them if they are comfortable with standing. We may be able to make seating for them.

I am not in favor of moving the book. it is the main vertical element and it gives the float height and presence. Shrinking it or leaning it back would negatively effect the overall scale. Btw, we are indeed at about 11 feet . I was thinking that the book could be a bit taller, so it is good to know the 14 foot limit.

There will be a toe kick along the edge of the float for feet. A border short of 2 feet tall is not going to keep someone from falling off and it would be a trip hazard at that height. A taller border would be dangerous because kids would have a tendency to lean on it and I can't think of a way to practically make it stand up to that kind of strain.

I hope that this alleviates the concerns expressed.
